Fresh Grape Tomato & Garlic Sauce + Sauvignon Blanc

I seem to be trying to rush summer’s arrival. With each trip to the grocery store or farmer’s market, I find myself hopefully scanning for the first tomatoes and peaches of the season, even though I know it’s too early. My consolation prize a few days ago was two pints of grape tomatoes, remembering this quick and easy sauce as a solution for dinner. Cherry tomatoes work just as well, […]

Banana Walnut Baked Oatmeal + A cup of coffee and a rainy winter morning

A mean little cold front blew into town overnight — ushering in a week of cold, wet mornings to finish up February. So today seemed like the perfect time to (finally) dive into a cookbook that’s been patiently waiting for me — Whole-Grain Mornings: New Breakfast Recipes to Span the Seasons, by Megan Gordon. Megan is also the author of the blog A Sweet Spoonful (how pretty is that kale […]

Cauliflower Gratin & Filets + Lalande-de-Pomerol

I cannot believe that I have not posted a single pairing yet in 2015. It is purely a reflection of how swamped I’ve been at work — no time to write here thus far this year. But trust me, there has been wine. And cooking. And a fair amount of bourbon, too. And a favorite new Chai tea discovery. A really easy, really good spiced lentil soup. And a quick […]

Red Lentil & Veggie Chorizo Chili + American Pale Wheat Ale

So, this started out in my imagination and on my shopping list as a New Orleans-style red bean soup. But on that particular day at my local Whole Foods, there was not a single dried red bean to be found. Not one. After getting the signature Whole Foods inexplicable inventory quirk shrug from a couple of employees, I grabbed a bag of red lentils. Clearly my exasperation at said Whole […]

Quinoa Flake Granola + (Not just any) Almond Milk

So, who else is totally new to the existence of quinoa flakes? Until recently, I had no idea! But there, in the oatmeal aisle of my local Whole Foods, was this solitary aqua blue box of these things. Turns out, quinoa flakes are much like other hot cereals and remind me of a sort of grassier-tasting cream of wheat. (They taste better than that sounds…) They also work nicely as […]

Sheep's Milk Cheeses with Slow-Roasted Tomatoes & Marcona Almonds + Rueda (and Madeira...)

This pairing all started with a dim memory of how I used to do these slow-roasted, oven-dried tomatoes all the time. And why didn’t I still do them? And when did I stop? What new obsession took their place? Anyway. Imagine the most uninspiring Roma tomatos. You know, the ones that are available year-round and smell and taste like… nothing. Organic or no, they’re mostly blah, right? Now imagine that […]

Italian-Style Stuffed Mushrooms (Two Ways) + Wine Roundup

I bet I’ve made these mushrooms a dozen times. They’re pretty basic, but in a good way. A simple stuffing of dry breadcrumbs, grated hard cheese and minced herbs — moistened with olive oil and the juices from the mushrooms as they cook. They’re not oozing with cheese and cream (not that there’s anything wrong with that!), so they make a good stand-up nibble — no plate and fork needed. […]
